yes, i do still listen to music.

i can't believe that last year, music was such a big part of my blog and now i very rarely talk about it. that being said, i'm going to bring that part of my life back to my little corner of the bloggersphere.
so, here's what i'm listening to as of late:

artist: peggy sue

peggy sue is a british indie pop/folk band. i first heard them at the kate nash concert that i went to in 2010 and have really liked them every since. i love their gravely, grainy, raw sound. they play all their own instruments and i think they write all of their own songs which makes me really appreciate their music even more.

i really like florence + the machine because she is still somewhat obscure but there are still enough people that know who she is that i can mention her and most people will say "oh, yeah, i know who that is." basically, she is what adele was a few years ago. anyway, her music is just so resonating. it crawls inside my mind and provokes new thoughts and ideas. i find it inspiring to listen to someone like f+tm.

lenka's music is really quite fun. she's a lot like mika (whom i LOVE). her stuff is so easy to listen to. and its so catchy. i like to mix it with the likes of peggy sue, joss stone or john mayer so that i have a little bit of sweet and deep all in one listening.

my faves Christmas albums.

isn't it ironic how daunting Christmas music can actually be? i mean, yes, Bing Crosby is incredibly nostalgic for me but, at the same time, can no one come out with new, original Christmas songs? or especially great covers of old classics? i mean really.so, yes, i'm a little picky about the Christmas tunes i will play during the Christmas season. but by being picky, i don't get sick of hearing the same songs by the same artists over and over and over again and when i do find an entire Christmas album that i actually like, its like finding that lost earring you've been searching all over for. GLORIOUS!
so, what do i listen to during the Christmas season? well, i'm so glad you asked. i've been circulating three albums this year and i've been really enjoying each album.

this album is one of my Christmas staples. i've been listening to it every year since 1998 and i probably will listen to it every year for the rest of my life. its just not Christmas without a little bit of my favorite boy band crooning to Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire.

um, who wouldn't want Michael Buble serenading them during the holidays? yeah, even his generic Christmas tunes make me melt like butter.

this is probably the most quaint and charming Christmas album i've ever heard. it makes the holidays feel so cozy and lovely. i love, love, love Zooey Deschanel's voice and their spin on some of the traditional Christmas songs are a nice change of pace from what's usually played on the radio.

the wayfarers.

last weekend i went to my friends' bands last performance together before Lo went and took her smarty pants self to law school. it was lovely.
the band is called the Wayfarers (yes, after the Rayban model) and they sing mostly Beatles covers.

perfect right? no, it gets better. all their shows are in coffee shops. okay. now that's perfect. even though i don't drink coffee, i love the chill atmosphere.

i know. not the best photos ever. but the lighting in the lovely, chill coffee shop? not so lovely and a little too chill. and i'm anti-flash so... that's the best of what i got.

she's got a great airy sound that is so easy to sing along to. i have no problem listening to her album over and over and over again. and her lyrics are crazy weird in the best way possible.

girl crush, anyone? everyone has been talking about her (which makes me laugh. i remember when i'd say "i love Adele!" and the response would be "...who?") but oh no, this little lady is no longer obscure.

she's everywhere. so why not summer with her?

another lovely lady who's got a set of lungs on her. and she's way awesome. in that cool, indie sort of way. her music is so raw and beautiful and awesome.

this week in review:

valentine's day cupcakes!

so, i worked on v-day but i actually didn't mind. we were super busy and so i was constantly on the go (i quite like it that way). it was so amazing seeing so many different walks of life coming in to celebrate the same thing: love. there were couples in love, parents with their children, single friends, and best friends.

it really warmed my heart right up seeing so many people who love each other.

amaze.

a-maze.

oh. and i also got froyo on this day. who in the world could forget that?! i mean, come on.

i've also been getting really into my book:

so, i've been trying to branch out from the middle grade reading rut that i've gotten quite cozy in (just like gregward recommended) and have been dabbling a little in a different genre of literature.

i'm pretty sure this book ^ is considered YA but... i'm not 100% sure. (how do i tell? it wasn't in a MG or YA section at the lib*.)

anyway, its a fictional story about non-fictional people who were involved in the salem witch trials. while i had a hard time getting addicted to the story, its the truth behind the story that gets me. seeing what those who were accused went through (and their families) is absolutely heart wrenching. i never realized how difficult it was for them and how poorly they were treated until i began reading this book.

i'm almost done with it and i'm pretty sure i'll be reading up more on the salem witch trials because now, i'm kinda hooked.

i also went to a friend of mines show the other night. it was muy fun-o. (i'm speaking spanglish here, peeps.)

i'm slightly addicted to live music. it, in my opinion, is one of the most wonderful things IN. THE. WORLD. gah. and while i didn't drag the rebel** along, i did get a vid of a very drunk lady/girl/woman/person showing her love for the band:

so, before she was sitting at the bassists' feet, she was over with her face all up in the guitarists grill. srsly. and when asked if she had any requests for songs, "just keep it fresh" she said.

january music obsessions.

this months music has been chuck full of happy-go-lucky, feel-good music and a few songs that i just absolutely love. my music selections will probably seem random to you, but it all makes sense to me!

aside from almost alice being a great album (its based on alice in wonderland. hello.) i love this song that avril sings. i've always loved her sound and then combine that with my love for alice in wonderland and its like a match made in heaven!

okay, so that is not the official vid for the song, but i found it on youtube and i thought it was kind of hilarious so i decided to post it anyway. -- this song is so nostalgic for me and ALWAYS makes me feel happy and sad all at the same time. its because of prince caspian (the movie). this song is played at the end and its such a bittersweet ending that, ugh, i just can't figure out whether to be glad the narnian war is over, or sad that the pevensies are leaving narnia again. (okay. nerd talk over.)

okay. i don't know where to begin with this one. hamalahamalahamala... okay. first, the corpse bride movie in and of itself is BRILLIANT and BEAUTIFUL and if you haven't seen it please stop reading this RIGHT NOW and go watch it. i'm serious. i like it better than nightmare before christmas... actually i could go as far as to say it is my favorite tim burton film (that even includes alice in wonderland). yes, its that good. secondly, danny elfman is AMAZZZZING. one of the reasons i love tim burton films so much is because you can usually count on him to include johnny depp and/or helena bonham carter in the cast and danny elfman as the composer. win, win, win. -- so this music, is so hauntingly beautiful. i love it. looooove it.

beautiful boy

so, i'm not really that big of john lennon fan. there, i said it. i mean, yes, i like the beatles (i listen to them almost everyday) but the fact that he was a woman beater just doesn't sit well with me and it sort of stops me from going full swoonage over him and being supportive of everything he does just because he was a beatle.

that being said, his music is good and this song, above all, is probably my favorite.

the lyrics are brilliant and that's enough to listen to it on repeat for awhile.

besides the fact that i may or may not have nightmares after watching the music vid, this song is awesome. i love how raw florence + the machine's music is and this is one of my all time favorites by her (them). and then bonus! its on the eclipse soundtrack. and i love listening to songs from movies/tv shows that i like and remembering the scene they were in.

so, this is a newer one for me. i was just informed about marina and the diamonds not too long ago and *surprise* i love their sound! she's right up there with kate nash, rilo kiley, and regina spektor for me. i think my favorite song on the album (right now) is hollywood. if you haven't heard of marina and the diamonds, please go look her (them) up and take a listen.

this is her most recent album (aside from live from london which is just her singing all her songs live) and so far, my favorite. the lyrics are so quirky and whimsical and i could just listen to this album all the time while eating mini tuna sandwiches with the crust cut off. that's how this album makes me feel. random, i know, but it makes sense in my head so, love me through it.

ingrid is one of my go-to artists (aka an artist that will always be on my iPod. i can never get sick of her and if i don't know what to listen to, she's one of my go-to/default artists.) but these two songs have been my favorites of hers as of late. far away is like the epitome of happy and glass is the epitome of sad. i love them both. i love glass about as much as i love jar of hearts, and i love far away about as much as i love the way i am. so, it all works. please, if you haven't heard these songs, check them out.

yes, i know its the 8th of january but i don't care, i'm still going to do my december music obsessions. i LOVED my december playlist, so i don't think it'd be fair to it if i didn't share what i was jamming to while all ya'll were listening to holiday music. so, without further ado, i bring to you:

so, i don't know about you, but i think this is the most beautiful beatles song ever. besides the fact that you can hear the drug trip in the music, i love the lyrics and the eerie essence of the song.

a lot of my love from this movie/soundtrack comes from my love for jim sturgess. that aside it is one of my favorite movies and one of my favorite soundtracks. i love what they did with beatles music. love it.

oh kelly clarkson. basically she's the only ai star i've ever appreciated (besides carrie underwood) and yes, her music is sometimes redundant and she's a little faded now-a-days, but i still really like her. sometimes its awesome to just turn on some white-girl-pain music and blare it, screaming the lyrics at the top of your lungs.

the dr. horrible's sing a-long blog soundtrack

as a nph (neil patrick harris) fan i pretty much love everything he does, but dr. horrible's sing a-long blog is strangely entertaining. not at all what i thought it was going to be, but after i saw it, i can't stop listening to the soundtrack and watching certain scenes from it. it stars nph (you know, from how i met your mother, barney stinson...) and nathan fillion (the guy that plays castle) and felicia day (she's on the guild). its really a great short and you should check it out. everyone needs a little rihanna every now and then in their lives. while i love her voice, i think the lyrics of some of her songs (especially the earlier ones) are kind of... horrible. i remember when this song came out though and i like it just as much now as i did then. its a very clever song. sad, but clever.

never thought i'd be a styx fan. and i'm still not fan-girl over them, but i do enjoy a good styx song every now and then. in december, these two were my faves.

IT IS MAGNIFICENT.) so, i remember this song was first heard on sytycd, a show i happen to frequent. i remember watching and afterwards thinking 'okay, where can i get that song?!' apparently i wasn't alone. not long after that, they had christina perry back on the show and she preformed jar of hearts live and then the song blew up. it was everywhere and everyone was claiming it as their heart-break song. yes, the amazing dance preformed to this song does aid in my love for the song, but other then that, i love the truth of the lyrics and the raw emotion that stems from it. christina said the song is based off of a boy that was a 'heart collector' and that she wrote it from the words of her own heart break. that's what makes it so beautiful and relatable. i love it. i. love. it.

i know this song is tired and over played, but you have to remember, i don't listen to the radio, so its wonderful for me! and i can't even tell you how many times i've felt like what this song expresses. apparently i was feeling a little bitter for the month of december. okay, not apparently. i was, straight up.

what? another jensen ackles plug? why yes. because he sings too. gah. swoon. this isn't the best song in the world, but i do love to hear my boy crooning in the background. it makes me smile for awhile.

i hadn't ever heard this song and then [months later] i checked my comments from my september playlist post and miss connally of musings of a hippie had told me about it. i looked it up and have been playing it ever since. i love the song. love it. its so emo and sad and i don't know why i like that about it, but i do. the piano alone is pretty gorgeous.

well, gregward and i have had this song blasting any chance we can get in celebration of the soon-to-be released adele album. her first album, 19, was so wonderful that i can only imagine 21 is going to be that much better. love me some adele.

oh fajita.

sometimes the communication barrier between generations can be frustrating.

other times, it can provide quite the laugh. luckily, mine usually results in laughter. observe:

as i was driving home from work with my dad, he we telling me how much he liked the josh groban, noel album.

"but i don't get the fajita song." he said.

i asked him, "what fajita song?"

"you know, ooooooooooooooohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh fffffffaaaaaaaaaaajjjjjjjjjjiiiiiiiiiiiiiitttttttttaaaaaaaaaaaa" he sang the words to the tune of ave maria, which is exatly what the song was. he just thought josh groban was saying 'oh fajita' rather than 'ave maria'.

a few minutes later, he begins tapping out a beat on his cell phone. "guess what song i'm starting," he said. i look at him with an are-you-serious expression. "dad, i have NO idea." 

"its 'tonight's the night" (which is NOT what the song is called.)

"i don't know that song." i tell him.

"you've got to be kidding me. its been the most popular song for the past like 24 months. oprah made it popular with the black eyed peas in that... what's that huge park in new york?"

"central park?"

"yeah," he answers, "they did this thing where black eyed peas starts singing and then these people start dancing like a synchronized swimming group. its awesome. youtube it." 

i kind of laugh. "oh, you mean a flash mob?"

his response? "well no, they all had their clothes on." 

can i just say, my dad is actually really smart. but i guess when it comes to modern day terms he's not as much in-the-know as i thought he was... what a guy.
